GCS, Inc. Projects Collect 2016 WBC Craftsmanship Awards

Washington, DC, March 2016— Two projects completed by GCS, Inc. received Craftsmanship Awards at this year’s Washington Building Congress Craftsmanship Awards Banquet. The projects, which both won in the Electrical – Lighting Systems category, include River Terrace Education Campus and St. Elizabeths Chapel Renovation – R.I.S.E. Demonstration Center.

The projects were major collaborative efforts between the craftsman, landlord, architects and construction team. Congratulations to Heller Electric, the craftsmen on both projects.

The 40,000 SF modernization and 37,700 SF expansion of the River Terrace Education Campus was a design-build project to provide the capability to serve up to 160 students ages 3 through 21 with exceptional needs and profound disabilities. The new state-of-the-art facility is a zero barrier environment designed and constructed with the needs of its occupants and their helpers of foremost consideration. Light harvesting, Bluetooth connectivity to hearing devices, soft floors, color selection, furniture, accessibility, and special-equipped amenities are standard throughout the new campus. The building layout creates a mixture of public and private areas that serve to improve and assist in the education of the school’s occupants; these spaces are used as a tool as much as traditional classroom fixtures. The lighting system in the classrooms were designed to be highly energy efficient. All the lighting is LED and is combined with a Lutron Control system which automatically dims the lighting in different parts of the classrooms depending on the level of exterior light. Each classroom has up to 8 solar tubes installed which can also be electrically controlled. The design gives an even level of light across all rooms in the building and stops any flickering light, which many students attending the school are sensitive to.

Built in the 1950s, the chapel at St. Elizabeths Campus East was converted into the R.I.S.E. (REL8.INOV8.STIMUL8.ELEV8) Demonstration Center. The 14,600 SF design-build renovation included a digital inclusion center, flexible creative spaces, demonstration areas, meeting and conference space, and a community computer lab. The lighting package for the R.I.S.E. Demonstration Center is a sophisticated mix of LED architectural lighting combined with a variety of useful control/dimming applications installed to convey that the user is ‘inhabiting a piece of technology’ while providing excellent energy performance. The lights include pendant, recessed, lay-in, and flush-mount units, and are installed according to a precise layout to reinforce the design concept. The project was delivered according to an intense schedule, being executed from schematic design to substantial completion in 10 weeks. This required careful cooperation, sourcing, coordination, and execution to deliver the eye-catching results present today.
