Duke Ellington School of the Arts

Owner: DC Department of General Services

Architect: cox graae + spack architects

Project Completion Date: August 2017

Project SF: 295,000

Project Description: This Design-Build project will expand the historic facility from 176,000 SF to approximately 294,900 SF in order to accommodate its current and future needs.

The modernization will encompass state-of-the-art performance spaces for both the visual and performing arts programs. The historic original front bar and portico will be preserved and re-established as the main entrance for the school. The interior of the building will revolve around a 4 story atrium with a new 850 seat theater suspended in the middle as the heart of the school. The modernization includes large studios and rehearsal spaces in addition to typical high school facilities such as classrooms and labs. The exterior will feature an outdoor amphitheater on the front lawn. Green initiatives include but are not limited to geothermal wells, green roofs, and rainwater cisterning/graywater usage.

Originally built in 1898, the building has received three renovations/major additions since and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003.
