Project Description: The existing historically and culturally significant building has been modernized for state-of-the-art teaching environments for the 21st century. The building now accommodates a middle school, a high school, the Cardozo Construction Academy and other trade schools; as well as administrative spaces, a media lab, sports facilities with associated support areas, a day care and playground for small children. A significant change to the building includes the addition of the 24,000 SF regulation sized gymnasium designed and constructed to blend into the existing structure. Also noteworthy is the transformation of two interior courtyards into atria flanking the cafeteria. The courtyards are now enclosed with the addition of glass roofs. Entrances to the atrium were opened and now allow for significant amounts of natural light on the ground level of the school. The kitchen was upgraded to a full catering facility. The modernization consisted of new MEP systems, ADA improvements, code compliance, site and technology improvements, and new furniture, fixtures and equipment (FF&E) requirements.
